Lungs Of The Earth
Rainforests are an invaluable resource, we literally can't survive without them. They provide 20% of our oxygen and store 25% of our carbon. They are a source of food, shelter and medicine and provide a habitat to 6 million species. So why are we destroying our rainforests at a rate faster than ever before? The Amazon, home to much of the World’s biodiversity, has decreased by almost 20% in the last 50 years.
In 2018, the world saw an increase in the use of Greenhouse Gases for the second year running, meaning the rainforests and their ability to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere are as vital now as ever. The rainforests role cannot be underestimated, and it’s interaction with winds and rainfall means that without them the world just becomes a hotter and drier place.
Rainforest indigenous communities need immediate support, they are the rainforests’ most effective guardians. The science and economics needed to slow and stop deforestation is well-rehearsed. The problem is that the villages and tribes that live within or around the forests are in impoverished countries. Their governments and corporations recognise the value of the rainforests’ natural resources and exploit them, seeking the immediate reward and overlooking the long-term effects.
Where communities such as the Peruvian Asháninka and the Kaifouna Village of Papa New Guinea are supported, they benefit from a better quality of life, improved health and greater education. These communities can then effectively and sustainably manage the forests, prevent deforestation and limit the devastating effects. With education and support, these communities can safeguard and one day, restore the forest. Cool Earth works to develop these partnerships, to ensure these communities and rainforests are protected. So far this organisation has saved over 200 million trees and 68 billion litres of water.
We've collaborated with artist Valentino Brunetti to create a design that will enable us to build further awareness of deforestation. From each sale of the product below, 25% of the profits will be donated to Cool Earth, the world's leading conservation organisation.
