Born in 1987 in Viseu, Portugal, Tiago Evangelista's work is highly influenced by graffiti, references from childhood, industrial or military facilities and the graphic spray languages that are used by a range of workers from construction to road maintenance crews. Being the son of a mechanic, the garage aesthetic has a strong influence on his work. From security tape lines, technical car drawings, brand logos and floor spray marks on concrete. Tiago's work often captures this aesthetic language, particularly in the form of paintings but also as installations with car parts.
Please explain your thoughts and process behind the design submitted
My designs are normally childhood references. in this case in the context of the time we are living in.
Everyone relates with those icons.
Who are your biggest influences?
My artist friends for sure, Ricardo Passaporte and Diogo Rodrigues, Diogo Correia, Germes Gang, Lex!
Outside of them i got influenced by a lot of outside artist, names like Bill Traylor and that American school of painting.
What would your dream freelance job be and why?
Painting from a little house somewhere in the wilderness/countryside.
Is there an underlying message you aim to communicate through your work, if so, what is it?
There’s always a subliminal message if you look hard at something, normally I don’t think a lot about the conceptual part, but it really depends on the work.
What are you reading, watching or listening to at the moment?
I’m watching Twin Peaks again and listening to a lot of ambient music lately, stuff like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno, William Basinski. It helps me reconnect better with the nature on my walks.
Any exciting plans for the future you would like to share outside of this collaboration?
There are a few gallery shows on the horizon for next year, but let’s wait for the pandemic to relax haha.
