Hi my name is Luca Bjørnsten. I’m 34 years old and I live and work in Copenhagen. I love ice cream and watching nature programs on TV.
Please explain your thoughts and creative process behind the designs submitted.
Since our collaboration started with marine conservation as a focus point, I decided to draw something iconic from the ocean that people can relate to. Sea mammals are amazing.
Is there an underlying message you aim to communicate through your work, if so, what is it?
Not really no, at least not a specific or a direct one. I guess my work is a slightly ironic or humorous take on aspects of contemporary life and our modern landscape. There’s always some kind of symbiosis between the way the artwork is made and the subject matter, or the narrative in the painting if you will. A feeling of something joyful and harmless yet something perhaps poisonous or synthetic and sticky like glue or candy. Like taking valium during a panic attack. Whatever is going on around you is still going on, it just feels less harmful.
This is in itself not a message, but it’s shaped from things that I find noteworthy or that interests me about modern man’s behaviour. Like mass production, consumerism, climate change, how we treat our wildlife, our excessive use of plastic etc. These things are some of the subjects in my paintings, but the materials or the use of paint is equally important. In the end it’s more a feeling I wish to portray than a message. From reading this and then having a look at my work, one might get the impression that I wish to point the finger at, let’s say delivery companies. But I really don’t. I’m very fascinated by the brightly colored logos, copy pasted around in our landscape. It’s a funny thing to document.
What would your dream freelance job be and why?
I would really like to do a collaboration with Gucci, but they haven’t asked me yet.
Any exciting plans for the future you would like to share?
A few yes. I just had my second solo show with Bricks Gallery in Copenhagen, and I’m talking with a few galleries around Europe for upcoming shows, but no dates have been set yet, so I’ll wait with announcements.
What does this collection mean to you?
“I <3 sea mammals”
