I Scream Colour
Humberto Cruz, also known as I SCREAM COLOUR Is an illustrator and graphic designer based in San Diego, CA. “I grew up between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego,CA. Growing up in a border town was interesting because I got to learn a little bit of each country. I’m inspired by pop culture and fashion in general. I also like to create my own characters and work with a lot of colour. The most important thing to me about creating art is to have fun with it and feel free like nobody’s looking at it.”
Please explain your thoughts and creative process behind the designs submitted.
It’s a great opportunity to send a message of hope and help using my artwork. Hopefully it can make an impact on someone’s life. It doesn’t matter how old you are, but we can teach the younger generations the importance of keeping our oceans clean. I usually think of the message first for my designs. Then, I work on the characters.
Is there an underlying message you aim to communicate through your work, if so, what is it?
I feel that I’ve been trying to send a positive message through my art. This past year made me grow as a person as well. I post every day on Instagram and when people look at my posts, I want to hopefully show support in a way that will make them feel that there is still hope and love in this crazy world. I also want to put a smile on them, that’s why I like drawing my colorful characters.
Have there been any standout or pivotal moments in your life that have inspired you as a creative?
I had people telling me that making art wasn’t a real job. I also heard the words “starving artist” a lot. That pushed me to keep doing it and staying creative. Sometimes you have to prove people wrong with dedication and enthusiasm.
Where does your passion for your craft derive from?
It comes from childhood memories. I don’t worry about drawing a perfect circle or line. I just want to have fun creating and be messy and show my personality in my characters.
What would your dream freelance job be and why?
To work full time as an illustrator and work on projects that can inspire others to do the same. Everything is possible.
Any exciting plans for the future you would like to share?
Just enjoy the present, and I know for sure that I will keep drawing until I’m very old. And hopefully never retired from drawing.
What does this collection mean to you?
We don’t have a lot of time and need to take action saving our oceans now. I just want to help spread the message and hopefully open people’s eyes. It’s a world problem that is affecting the ecosystem and it’s frustrating knowing that many don’t care. We have to educate those that don’t believe in this issue. I believe that art is a good way to communicate and bring awareness to many.
